Optimizing a website to rank higher in searches is obviously important to increase traffic and, in turn, ideally conversions. There are many things that go into optimizing a website, but there is one aspect that deserves special attention: keywords. When focusing on keywords to optimize a site, it’s helpful to utilize tools to help find the right keywords, making the whole optimization process much more efficient (and often much more successful.)

Research tools

It is important to know the overall content on the website and how it relates to your business goals. Pick out some of the “highlights” of the website and use those to begin the keyword search. Usually a good place to start when picking out the highlights are considering what aspects of your site or business are most important in helping you reach your business goals – whether it’s certain services, specific locations of your business, or even top-selling products.

There are plenty of different keyword research tools to take advantage of throughout the internet. Some good ones to try are:

Generally these tools will give you the search volume of the word (how many times a word is searched within a specific time frame) and position tracking for keyword rankings, in addition to what the current cost per click (CPC) rate is and other useful information. Some tools are free and others will charge some sort of a fee. It’s usually a good idea to test a few tools first to determine which one will work best for you.

One of the tools we prefer to use here at Perfect Search is SEMrush. This tool offers many different ways to check the quality of a keyword. With live data, SEMrush displays several metrics to aid a keyword decision. The ability to see metrics like how the word is trending, phrase match, and related keywords not only shows how valuable this tool is but it also ensures the effectiveness of a keyword on a website.

It’s important to remember that one of the simplest but incredibly effective changes that can be made to a website is the use of rich keywords. Do not miss out on a chance to rank higher by missing the keyword research step.
