Get to know Justice Pettigrew, Analyst of Search & Social. She loves building client relationships—but (spoiler alert!) she dreams of one day building her own house.

1) What’s your favorite work task? What’s your most challenging work task?

I love having reporting calls with my clients. What motivates me at work is knowing that there is something bigger behind what I’m doing, and that’s to help my clients.

As someone who hates public speaking, I used to dread reporting calls. Yet, I’ve seen the nature of these calls change from “how do I make sure I say the right thing” to “how can I work together and partner with my clients to meet their goals.”

Talking to my clients is my consistent reminder of who I’m doing my work for. Whether it’s a family-run plumbing company or a men’s grooming brand, I love that I’m helping them build more business and traffic, and ultimately I’m building whatever dream they have for their company too.

Knowing how to tell a story with the numbers I report on is always challenging for me. Working in SEO and PPC means you have a lot of data at your fingers. The tricky thing is knowing what numbers are important and what to pay attention to.

It’s easy for me to dig a wormhole where I’m making reports and analyzing numbers, but at the end of the day, they don’t always impact the metrics the way I think they will.

2) How has your SEO/PPC knowledge changed how you perceive the world?

Since working in digital marketing, I’ve started to pay a lot more attention to ads. I used to always think all ads were bad and would never click on them. I also pay more attention to what comes up on search engines when I search for something.

PPC (among other things) has also made me question the echo chamber I live in and the way digital marketing can intensify that. With targeted ads based on what I like and what my interests are on Facebook, it’s easy for me to see things that everyone like me sees too.

3) Where are you from? What’s your favorite place to visit when you’re home?

I grew up in Hong Kong, but my dad is from Florida and my mom is from Malaysia! It’s hard to say what my favorite place is because it’s less about the physical spaces and more about the people and memories that make me love visiting home.

I love visiting my brother and sister-in-law’s place because my brother is great at cooking and always feeds me. It’s also fun going to places I went grocery shopping growing up and places my mom took me when I was young. Hong Kong has gotten a lot more modern over the years, so it’s exciting to see the changes and remember what it used to be.

4) What’s your favorite Perfect Search memory?

I love whenever we leave our everyday routine and hang out as a company. The one that especially comes to mind is our offsite in September. We went to a really cool location and I got to interact with other parts of the company that I don’t interact with that often. It was nice to brainstorm, play games, and hear presentations and ideas from my coworkers.

5) Imagine you have an *unlimited* budget for the DIY project of your dreams. What would you work on?

This is a hard one. Assuming I also have a lot of time, I’d love to build my own house and all the furniture in it. I’ve made some of the furniture at my apartment, but it’s with the cheapest wood I could find at Home Depot. And I’m still sleeping on just a mattress at home because I keep telling myself I’ll eventually build a bed.

One of Justice’s impressive DIY projects.

I’d also love to build my house somewhere with lots of nature. One of my favorite things to do is be in nature — whether that’s hiking or just driving somewhere out of the city. It’d be great to have a getaway house I made with my own hands!
